From Classroom to Career: Rinny Jose
Coming from India, Rinny Jose says choosing to pursue a Master of Business Administration in Canada was a “leap of faith” and the idea originally seemed overwhelming. That is, until she discovered VIU while searching for schools online.
“What stood out to me was not just the scenic beauty but also the fact that VIU is a public university with a strong reputation for fostering a welcoming, inclusive community,” she says.
Rinny made the move, completed the program and now works full-time with the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, where she has found her passion for public relations, marketing and community engagement as an Information Service Coordinator.
We caught up with Rinny to learn more about her background, her experience at VIU and her current role.
Why did you choose VIU?
Sitting 11,325 kilometers away in India, I was uncertain about pursuing an MBA at VIU. I already had a master’s degree, so the idea of starting another program in a new country felt overwhelming. Then VIU popped up in my search, and the breathtaking images of the campus captured my heart. What stood out was not just the beauty but also the fact that VIU has a strong reputation for fostering a welcoming, inclusive community. When relocating with a family, your decision goes beyond academics. You think about lifestyle, safety and opportunities for growth. VIU ticked all those boxes. The cherry on top? Living on campus for four months. I immersed myself in campus life, met people who are now like family and built connections I will treasure forever. It wasn’t just a university decision; it was a life decision, and it turned out to be one of the best I’ve ever made.
What did you enjoy most about studying at VIU?
The supportive academic environment and the opportunity to connect with people from all over the world. Each classroom discussion was enriched by diverse perspectives, making every moment a meaningful learning experience. What I cherished the most was our small study circle. It started with just two people and eventually grew to nearly 20 of us, huddled together in the library or common rooms before exams and assignments. Those late-night study sessions were filled with learning, laughter and camaraderie, and they remain some of my fondest memories.
Describe your involvement in the VIU community.
My volunteering journey began in the VIU Students’ Union. It was my first workplace experience in Canada and I found a sense of belonging there. I participated in events, connected with students and learned how to manage events while embracing different cultures. One of the most fun experiences was being part of the runner-up team in the 2024 VIU’s Got Talent competition. Another initiative close to my heart was starting a club with a friend called MADS – the Mom and Dad Student Club – for VIU parents. It’s a small but growing club that brought together parents navigating their studies alongside family responsibilities. This initiative not only helped me connect with others who shared similar challenges but also reinforced the importance of building supportive networks within the university community.
What VIU services made a difference for you as you explored the transition to work?
The Work Integrated Learning course was a standout for me. It wasn’t just a class, it was a real, hands-on experience guided by mentors who genuinely cared about our growth. VIU’s counselling services also left a lasting impact on me. Moving to a new country with a family while managing studies wasn’t easy. Counsellors were approachable, empathetic and always there when I needed guidance. Their focus on mental health and well-being made a big difference during some of my most challenging times. The Cultural Connections program is another gem. It was a beautiful space where people from all over the world came together to share their stories and showcase their cultures.
Tell us about your role with the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce.
I’m honoured to be part of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, serving as the Information Service Coordinator under the inspiring leadership of Corry Gervais. In this role, I focus on enhancing the Chamber's presence through marketing, managing social media and supporting events that connect and engage our community. My time at VIU equipped me with a robust foundation in business and critical thinking, skills that have been invaluable in my work. Beyond academics, the diverse experiences and cultural exposure at VIU shaped my ability to adapt and approach challenges with resilience. I see my position at the Chamber as a platform to not only grow professionally but also to contribute meaningfully to Nanaimo's vibrant community.
What’s next for you?
I’m focused on making a meaningful impact in my current role at the chamber while continuing to grow personally and professionally. My goal is to deepen my expertise in public relations and community engagement. But if I’m being honest, there’s another dream on the horizon. Someday, I’d love to own a food truck in Nanaimo. Until then, I’ll keep learning, growing and contributing wherever I can!
