A guide to getting involved in campus life
You’re at university and settling into the rhythm of school and studies. But maybe you’re wondering about the vibrant university life you’ve heard so much about, or you’re an introvert trying to find your place. Whether you’re excited about joining in or feeling a bit overwhelmed, this blog is for you. Here are a few ways you can get involved in campus life!
Clubs
Clubs are one of the best ways to connect with people who share your interests. Whether you're passionate about chess, mahjong or Dungeons and Dragons, there’s something for everyone. VIU has more than 50 clubs, many of which are tied to programs such as the Accounting Students’ Association or the Chemistry Club. And the best part? You can create your own club if your niche isn’t represented yet!
A great way to stay informed about what clubs are available and when they’re hosting events is through the Students’ Union app (VIUSU on Apple or Android). It’s your gateway to finding your community and meeting new friends. You can also attend the Club Fair this Wednesday, October 23 from 10 am to 1 pm in the Malaspina Theatre to have a chance to meet the club leaders and other members.
The Pub
Looking for a place to unwind after class? The VIUSU Pub is the perfect place to relax and connect with fellow students. The pub is open Monday to Friday, 11:30 am to 7:30 pm except Thursdays when it’s open until midnight.
Clubs often host events here, too. The dance team even has a country night where they teach line dancing! It’s a great spot to either meet new people or bring a group of friends. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, head to the pub in the afternoon to enjoy a group study session with some snacks and drinks.
Group study sessions
Speaking of studying, group study sessions are a great way to stay on top of assignments and connect with classmates. If you struggle to stay focused alone, studying in a group can make a world of difference, especially during exam season when motivation can be hard to find. VIU’s library has group study rooms where you and your classmates can meet up, collaborate and tackle those assignments together.
Stay in the loop
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in VIU’s campus life is by attending events hosted throughout the year. From social gatherings and VIU Mariners home games to academic workshops, there’s always something going on. Some must-attend campus events like WorldVIU Days and VIU Fest are packed with games, prizes and plenty of opportunities to meet new people and have a blast!
Check out events.viu.ca to stay updated on all the upcoming activities. You’ll also find posters around campus in almost every building promoting student-hosted events. Keep an eye out as you never know when something interesting might catch your attention.
Getting involved at VIU is all about finding what resonates with you. Whether through clubs, study groups or hanging out at the student pub, there are plenty of ways to build connections and make the most of your university experience. So, take that first step, put yourself out there and find your place in VIU’s vibrant community.
