How do I become a student at Vancouver Island University?

Prospective students considering an education at Vancouver Island University have a lot of questions. One of the most frequent (and frantic) questions is simply: How do I apply? The application process may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve broken it down into five manageable steps.

Choose a program

VIU offers more than 120 different programs in many different areas of study. Program pages provide a wealth of useful information, including program fees and outlines. Pay close attention to all admission requirements and deadlines. Applications for many programs open October 1 and close March 31, but that’s not always the case. If you’re unsure, connect with the recruitment team.

Submit your application through Education Planner BC

You’ve decided on a program and are ready to apply. Great! Navigate to VIU’s application page and click Start Your Application to VIU. This will take you to EducationPlannerBC, the application portal used by most BC post-secondary institutions. You’ll need to take a few minutes to create an account (if you don’t already have one). After entering your contact information and educational history, you’ll select your program. To finalize your application, you’ll need to pay a small fee, payable by credit card.

Read and act on all communications from Admissions

You’ve successfully submitted your application, now what? Keep an eye on your inbox, and double check your junk and spam folders over the next couple weeks for communications from VIU’s Admissions department. Admissions will provide next steps including how to submit supporting documentation (including transcripts) to complete your application.

Wait for a decision

Now, wait for a decision from Admissions. Along with the decision, you’ll receive instructions on your next steps, including how to accept your offer as well as how and when to pay your tuition deposit. Offers for most academic programs go out in late April/early May.

Pay your tuition deposit

This crucial step is sometimes overlooked. A non-refundable, non-transferable $200 tuition deposit is necessary to secure your seat in a program. This deposit is typically due three weeks after the offer of admission and is applied towards total tuition.
