#VIUGrad, Summer Barbecue and loan info 💰

Next week we are hosting our biggest event of the year on campus – convocation! There are three ceremonies that take place June 23 and 24. You may have seen some of our valedictorian profiles on the VIUBlog or on social media. You can join in the excitement by wishing our graduates well on our livestreams or anywhere on our social media accounts with the #VIUGrad hashtag.

This will be the last Summer Session edition of the Pulse in your inboxes. The regular newsletter will be back in August before the start-up of the Fall Semester. We may pop back in your inboxes briefly if there are important updates or events to share; until then have a great summer!

Indigenous History Month

June is Indigenous History Month, during which we mark the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.Read President Dr. Deborah Saucier’s message. One of the ways we are marking Indigenous History Month is by highlighting the voices and works of some Indigenous writers who are part of our community. You can view these stories on the #VIUBlog. This week you can read Sheena Robinson’s story. Other resources/events:

On the #VIUBlog, the PSA shares some ideas that can help you demonstrate that you’re an ally. The PSA’s website also has some insightful FAQs that explain the importance of safe spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ people in our community. Book Launch: Indigenous re-Search Methodologies 📖

Indigenous methodologies have been silenced and obscured by the Western scientific means of knowledge production. In a challenge to this colonialist rejection of Indigenous knowledge, Anishinaabe re-searcher (hyphen in re-searcher intentional) Kathleen Absolon describes how Indigenous re-searchers re-theorize and re-create methodologies. Join the Office of Indigenous Education & Engagement on Wednesday, June 22, from 11:30 am to 1 pm, to launch Absolon’s second edition of Kaandossiwin, How We Come to Know: Indigenous re-Search Methodologies. The event takes place in Shq’apthut. Register here.
