VIU student news: December 11, 2024

December 11, 2024

The holiday break is almost here 🎄

As we wrap up 2024, we have a video message from VIU President Dr. Deborah Saucier, thanking you for all your contributions to our community. In the video above, she celebrates a year of coming together, supporting one another and embracing new possibilities. We hope you take time over the holiday break to rest, recharge and find joy with those who matter most to you.

This is the last student newsletter of 2024 and we would be grateful if you took a moment to fill out this short survey. We’d love to hear from you!

Need to know

The holiday break and severe weather ⛈️ ❄️

A reminder that VIU is closed from December 23, 2024, to January 1, 2025, reopening January 2, 2025. During this time, if severe weather happens, we will not be communicating a campus closure with our community, as VIU is already closed. Wondering how VIU makes campus closure decisions and how you can expect to be notified when classes are in session? Review the Severe Weather Closure procedures.

Studying for exams? 👩‍💻

Student shoutout

Congrats to Halle Wall and Dakota Hodge, whose work is part of the travelling exhibit A Seat at the Table – on display at the Nanaimo Museum right now. Retired Anthropology Professor Dr. Imogene Lim’s class worked on research related to the travelling exhibit last year. Halle decided to make a diorama of The Diner’s Rendezvous – a historic Nanaimo Chinese-owned restaurant. Dakota did the research portion of the assignment.

The exhibit explores historical and contemporary stories of Chinese Canadians in BC and their struggles for belonging. It looks to the food and restaurant culture as an entry point to feature stories that reveal the great diversity of immigrant experiences and of the communities immigrants develop.
