5 student services you need to check out at VIU
One of the things that makes Vancouver Island University unique is its success-focused approach to education throughout every part of the student experience, from academics to campus life to interactions with faculty and staff outside of the classroom. This approach recognizes that every single person’s learning journey is unique and requires individualized attention. Each year, Canadians mark Black History Month in February to recognize the contributions, accomplishments and ongoing inequities of Black and African descent Canadians and people living in Canada.
There are a variety of events and activities being organized to celebrate this important month at VIU. We hope to see you there!
VIU Nursing student gives back to community through successful grant application
Fourth-year VIU Nursing student Carliegh Gainer chose her field of study because she’s looking forward to a career that will bring her “to many different areas and places.”
Although she has not yet graduated, this reasoning behind her decision is already starting to play out in the form of a grant application that was approved recently to fund a mural project at a local elementary school.

How is the Spring Semester going so far?
Going viral with TikTok “body hacks”
A quest to defeat boredom turned into a viral series of TikTok videos for Vancouver Island University Electrical student Mike de Vries, who started sharing tips and advice he learned during his extensive world travels on the social media platform in 2020. These tips vary from how to sweat less and get rid of bad breath, to the best time to study and how to stay focused. Since then, his #bodyhacks videos have earned him more than 430,000 follows and almost 16 million likes.
An award-winning work co-op with the BC Wildfire Service
While Nadia Linning has always had an interest in the field of travel, tourism and recreation, a co-op opportunity this past summer resulted in a whole new experience and role for her, one that she ultimately ended up excelling in.
Nadia, a fourth-year student in VIU’s Bachelor of Tourism Management program, worked as a Fire Information Assistant with the BC Wildfire Service during the 2022 wildfire season.

Many students don’t realize soon enough how accessibility services can impact their learning. Have you ever felt like you’re struggling with your learning more than your peers due to a disability?
