Celebrating National Volunteer Week
Volunteering is about giving your time, skills and energy to an organization or cause that you care about. It’s about engaging in the community and giving back. It can also be a good opportunity to learn new skills and ideas, meet new people and try different kinds of work.
A snapshot of student life, academics and mental health at VIU
In November 2021, VIU launched its first Student Success Survey, which asked students about their experiences and motivations while attending VIU. The results are being distributed to all VIU faculties to be used for planning purposes. VIU values student feedback and the survey team would like to thank all students who took the time to participate.
Here are some of the highlights from the survey:
Who was surveyed and what were the response rates?
All current VIU students in November 2021 were invited to complete the survey and 42% of students responded.

Revamped Hospital Unit Coordinator program returns to VIU after two-year hiatus
A newly revamped Hospital Unit Coordinator (HUC) program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) is proving to be a success, as the first cohort of students to come through the program in two years prepare to graduate this spring.
The program, formerly a six-month, part-time program was paused at the onset of COVID-19, due to challenges associated with conducting it solely online.
Helping students gain confidence and connect with culture
Vancouver Island University’s ‘su’luqw’a’ Community Cousins Aboriginal student mentorship program celebrated its 10th anniversary in September 2021. In honour of this important milestone, we are sharing stories of people closely connected with the program every month.
