Tips from the Career Studio

With two upcoming career fairs in the works, we thought now was a good time to offer some advice to help you prepare to put your best foot forward. Don’t miss the career fair for on-campus jobs on September 14 and a career fair for off-campus employment opportunities on September 15. Secure the position you want by following these tips:

Dress to impress

Wear professional clothing that reflects your personal style and makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Research participating companies

Look up the list of companies attending the job fair beforehand and do a quick background check on each one. Familiarize yourself with their values, mission and recent projects to stand out during conversations.

Prepare an elevator pitch

Craft a short and engaging introduction that highlights your skills, experiences and career goals. Practice it until it rolls off your tongue smoothly.

Bring copies of your resumé/portfolio

Print out several copies of your well-designed, error-free resumé to hand out to recruiters. Consider including a QR code that leads to your online portfolio or LinkedIn profile.

Develop a list of thoughtful questions

Prepare a few questions about the company or the role you are interested in. This demonstrates your genuine interest and helps you gather valuable information.

Practice active listening

During conversations, focus on the recruiter's responses and ask follow-up questions. Show that you are attentive and genuinely interested in what they have to say.

Bring a notepad and pen

Jot down important notes during conversations, such as the recruiter’s name, key details about the company or any follow-up actions you need to take.

Network with other students

Engage with fellow students attending the fair, as they may have insights or connections that can be beneficial for your job search. Make new friends and expand your professional network.

Create a professional business card

Design a simple and eye-catching business card with your name, contact information and relevant social media handles or website. Exchange cards with recruiters to make a lasting impression.

Don’t forget to relax and have fun

Job fairs can be intense, but remember to take breaks, hydrate and have a positive attitude. Enjoy the experience and be yourself, as employers are not only looking for qualifications but also for individuals who are a good fit for their company culture.
