From lieutenant commander to business student
At age 30, Carol Seabra thought she had everything she had strived to achieve in life – a job as a high-ranking official with the Brazilian navy, a nice apartment and enough money to travel and see the world. After a life-altering injury in 2019, she began doing some deep thinking about next steps and realized there was more she wanted to achieve. She had visited Canada in 2018 and she decided that living, studying and working here would be her next move.

Saving an endangered Nanaimo flower
A small flower with yellow and cream petals is on the edge of extinction in Canada and a VIU research team is fighting to save it.
Bryan Lamprecht, a VIU Biology student, is working with Dr. Jasmine Janes, a VIU Biology Professor, studying Hosackia pinnata, also known as Bog bird’s-foot-trefoil. The rare species is red-listed in BC and Canada. There are only five sites where this rare flower grows in Canada, all near Nanaimo. The plant also grows along portions of the western coast of the United States.
Life is more fun with purpose
Brian Yin discovered his passion for education while coaching and mentoring others when he worked as an auditor in New York. He contacted his old high school principal about the possibility of becoming a teacher and after an encouraging reply decided to pursue teaching.
He enrolled in VIU’s Bachelor of Education, Post Baccalaureate program, graduating in 2017. He now works as the Principal of Sino-Canada School.

More than 100 MBA students have earned their Digital Marketing Associate Certification this year. This is the first class to receive this credential, which is thanks to a partnership with the Digital Marketing Institute.
Embedding this certification in the MBA curriculum is a chance for aspiring digital marketers to enhance their expertise and understanding of t he field.
